yes folks, for your enjoyment, it's that band that no-one's heard of...

the webb borthers

the brothers webb first came to my attention sfter noticing their uncanny resemblence to britpop boy, tim burgess. however, i have since come to the conclusioin that the keyboard-bangin' webb (christian? looks like a kind of tim burgess/ian brown hybrid, whilst the guitar-wielding webb (justin) looks more like noel gallagher. though they both wear clothes that tim burgess would be proud of!

right, now we've got the important bit cleared up... onwards!

so, how did they get their rather inventive name then?

well, the answer's simple really, they are brothers and their surname is fisher! only joking. shockingly, their surname is webb. so that explains it then. not such an inventive name after all.

since they're brothers, as their name quite rightly indicates, it would be ludicrous to tell you when they formed, but they were born into a musical family. (more later). it wasn't, however, until 1998 that album-length demo, "beyond the biosphere" (a sort of sci-fi, flaming lips meet super furry animals kinda thing) was produced at their home. now, this sounds impressive by anyone's standards, until i tell you that their father is highly famous in the u.s. and probably hideously rich with it! their father is, unfortunately, not as famous in england - indeed, he's so little known that i dunno his name, though sources suggest his surname is fisher. d'oh! i mean webb.

but the webb brothers don't rely upon their father's fame for their success - quite the opposite in fact. because of their father's fame in the u.s. their chances of success there have been impeded, and it's here in the uk that they are more successful! parents eh? ruin your street cred!

so, in 2000, the webbs appeared with their debut album-proper, "maroon." retaining the in yer face americanism exposed in "beyond the biosphere," "maroon" owns more songs which would qualify as "anthems," such as "low grade fever," "marooned" and the work of genius that is "fluorescent lights." but its one downfall is that it sounds more polished than "beyond the biosphere."

well, there you have it. the webb brothers are definitely worth a few listens. "beyond the biosphere" is the more lo-fi of the albums, with "maroon" being the most clean sounding, but there are some excellent songs on both. so go and get both of the albums - now dammit - cos no-one seems to know who they are, despite the fact that one of their songs ("i'm over and i know it") has already been covered by the bluetones!

"i've been on the scene and i'm probably clean and you wanna take me home"
