er, hi, my name's becky and this is my first visit so i'm a bit apprehensive. i've been an addict since 20th august 2000. this is my story...
it was a normal sunday evening. well, aside from the fact that it was a usually boring sunday with nothing on t.v., and that i was still at the v2000 festival. it was quite hot too. so it wasn't a normal sunday evening, but nothing weird had happened...
...yet.
with macy gray, the bloodhound gang and mansun performing on other stages, it isn't surprising that we chose to check out the flaming lips, despite having hardly heard of them. but, i was totally unprepared for the experience i was about to, um, experience!
the band delivered a completely unique performance which moved me so much that by the end of the gig i felt like a different person.
the gorgeous sounds twinned with the sometimes disturbing images hit me straight in the stomach and were nothing short of breathtaking.
it's so difficult to pinpoint highlights of the gig, as the whole performance was a highlight of my weekend. but i think most memorable moments include the lyric-less version of "feeling yourself disintegrate," wayne distributing bags full of balloons to the crowd, and "the gash," with its video of a man being shot in the head and a dog exploding, which switched to women in swimsuits doing aerobics! "somewhere over the rainbow" has to be the unlikeliest of songs to cover, but the most perfect for the flaming lips>
but, the most memorable moment of the gig was the touching "waitin' for a superman" which sounded beautiful, and with the video, i was almost in tears!
i mean, even their soundcheck at the top of their performance was a break from the routine monotony of "one two, one two," and was better than anyone else's.
initially, i was looking forward to seeing the headline act, but after seeing the flaming lips, everything else was of so little importance.
so people, that's my story. after that mind-blowing gig that will never be matched by another band, i became addicted to the flaming lips, and that's why i need help. but what am i saying? i don't need help. this is just too good!
